The term "Hannya" has two distinct meanings: primarily the sacred meaning of "Buddhist wisdom" and the meaning of "the face of a female demon driven mad by jealousy and resentment." It refers to a profound intellect that discerns the truth.
1. Original meaning in Buddhism: The highest level of "wisdom": A profound intellect that sees through all things and principles as they are and attains enlightenment.
Origin: A transliteration of the Sanskrit word "prajñā."
Characteristics: Not mere knowledge or logical thinking, but intuitive enlightenment obtained through spiritual practice. The "Hannya" in the Heart Sutra also falls under this category.
2. Meaning in Noh masks and tradition: "A female demon driven mad by jealousy," a mask representing the face of a woman whose intense jealousy and resentment have reached their peak and transformed her into a demon.
Characteristics: Characterized by two horns, pointed fangs on the top and bottom, and crying-like eyes.
Origin: It is said to have been created by the Noh mask maker "Hannyabō" during the Muromachi period, or to have originated from a line of dialogue in a Noh play.
Muromachi Period(室町時代) is from 1336 to 1573.
